Superintendent Lea Damisch:
I am pleased to share with you some important information from the Illinois State Board of Education. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides the opportunity for districts and schools to build on existing strengths and to close academic achievement gaps. ESSA creates the statewide conditions to support districts, schools, and most importantly, students who need additional assistance and resources. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is beginning its comprehensive implementation of ESSA as required by the federal government. (ISBE, 2018)
I want to personally offer my congratulations to the students, staff and parents of our students who have earned these outstanding designations!
Locust School Exemplary
Exemplary: A school that has no under-performing student demographic groups at or below the “all students” group of the lowest 5 percent of all Title 1 schools, a graduation rate of greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is in the top 10 percent of schools statewide. Schools that receive an Exemplary School designation may apply to serve in the IL-EMPOWER network of partners.
Grant Intermediate Commendable
Commendable: A school that has no under-performing student demographic groups at or below the “all students” group of the lowest 5 percent of all Title 1 schools, a graduation rate greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is not in the top 10 percent of schools statewide. Schools that receive a Commendable School designation may apply to serve in the IL-EMPOWER network of partners.
These designations are a reflection of the hard work of our staff and the wonderful school-home connections that this district continues to nurture. What is truly remarkable about these designations is that we have been able to achieve at a very high level academically while still maintaining the lowest elementary school tax rate in the county. Per information on the Illinois School Report Card, our district is only funded at 64.5% of adequacy. The state average spent per pupil expenditure is $8,024.00 and our district spent $5,036.00—that is almost $3,000.00 less! Again, this is a reflection of the high quality of staff at our school and our engaged parents who want to see their children be successful in today’s global marketplace.
